NON FACE-TO-FACE THREATENED ASSAULT

WHO EXPERIENCED NON FACE-TO-FACE THREATENED ASSAULT IN 2017–18? (Table 13)

During the 2017–18 reference period, 0.8% of Australians aged 15 years and over (157,900) experienced non face-to-face threatened assault. The non face-to-face threatened assault victimisation rate was 0.7% (68,500) for men and 0.9% (85,700) for women.

The following groups were more likely to experience non face-to-face threatened assault in the last 12 months:

  • persons born in Australia (1%) compared to persons born overseas (0.3%)
  • persons living outside capital cities of Australia (1.1%) compared to those living in capital cities (0.6%)
  • persons living in an area in the lowest quintile of the Index of Relative Socio-Economic Advantage and Disadvantage (1%) compared to persons living in the highest quintile (0.5%). Endnote 1

There appeared to be no difference in the rate of experiencing non face-to-face threaten assault for persons with a non-school qualification (0.9%) compared to persons with no non-school qualification (0.7%).

TYPES OF NON FACE-TO-FACE THREATENED ASSAULT EXPERIENCED (Table 16) Endnote 2

Of women who experienced non face-to-face threatened assault:
  • 57% (48,700) experienced threatened assault over the phone
  • 51% (43,300) experienced threatened assault via SMS
  • 41% (35,200) experienced threatened assault via instant messaging/social networking.

Of men who experienced non face-to-face threatened assault:
  • 47% (32,100) experienced threatened assault over the phone
  • 37% (25,100) experienced threatened assault via SMS
  • 35% (24,200) experienced threatened assault via instant messaging/social networking.

WHETHER MOST RECENT INCIDENT WAS REPORTED TO POLICE (Table 1)

Approximately one quarter (27%) of all persons who experienced non face-to-face threatened assault had their most recent incident reported to police.
